Speak French with Confidence
I ask all of my students to keep a journal for the I ask all of my students to keep a journal for their French as it has a number of benefits; chief among them is that it forces you to keep all your bad French days and moments in perspective by going back and seeing how far you've come, and also makes you acknowledge all your wins.

Reflecting on progress can be done at any time. After being inspired by @lea__english I'm doing a mid-year review and I encourage you to do the same! For your French or just for your life :). It's fun going back through photos, at the very least.

Some of my significant moments this year so far:

🌟 Had to unexpectedly say goodbye to a furry friend that had become very dear.
🌟 Visited 2 new countries (Greece and Cyprus) and went back to Spain for a month.
🌟 Met tons of beautiful souls!
🌟 Changed my business model basically overnight in February.
🌟 Ran the Montpellier half-marathon with one of my best friends and my sister!
🌟 Got back to learning Spanish through speaking.
🌟 Planned at least 2 more work/travel trips this year.
🌟 My YouTube channel saw significant growth between February and May, finally!
🌟 I took the plunge and decided to launch a membership for motivated intermediate students!

These first 6 months have been amazing. These 2nd 6 months I need to bring in more revenue to the business to pay for all my travels :D. Therefore my big goals for between now and the end of the year are:

🥅 Launch the Confident French Speaker Community and make it as good as it can be for my students (maybe you??). I reaaaaallly want to make it the GO TO safe & supportive space for intermediate French learners te world over.
🥅 Continue to try to live in the present and "profiter de" the human connections I make.

If the CFSC (my membership) interests you, it launches very soon for anyone I've worked with in the past, and then in September for everyone! You can read more on my website (link in my bio) and put your name down on the waiting list, or send me a message here!

Perks include:
🙌 Library of over 100 video lessons and exercises.
🙌 Regular group classes.
🙌 Early, ad-free access to my YouTube vids.

Share your mid-year recap and goals and tag me. I'll share it :).
Did you know you could say "travailler SUR quelque Did you know you could say "travailler SUR quelque chose" just like in English (work ON something), but that you can also say "travailler quelque chose" to express the exact same thing.

In fact, someone told me that "travailler sur" is perhaps taken from English. I've never ever had a problem with it. But I like knowing the things that are purely French and don't follow the same structure as English.

Here's an extract from the lyrics of the song "Seul avec du monde autour" by Orelsan.

Lyrics are written to represent the spoken word, hence the contraction of Je travaille to J'travaille.

I'm not sure it's available for all songs but I like that on Spotify you can view the lyrics of tracks. I listen a few times before going in and checking out the lyrics. I then hear the correct words that I didn't get before in future listens.
Some do it in 6 months (not many) some do it in 6 Some do it in 6 months (not many) some do it in 6 years.

3 years, 3 months, and 22 days. On the 22/2/22 we hit 20k subscribers on YouTube.

Thanks to the algorithm picking up the last video and spreading it to more of you people très très sympas, the channel has seen a 10x growth in subscribers the last month over the previous 28 day period. No exaggeration!

Merci merci merci for all your kind comments and support depuis 3 ans, 3 mois, et 22 jours.

Ça n'a pas été facile. J'ai vécu plein de moments bas et de doute mais là, c'est le début d'un chapitre spécial dans la vie de French in Plain Sight.

Now let's just hope the growth keeps going. I know what YouTube's like. The next video could tank 😂.

Two Winter Phrases in everyday French that I learn Two Winter Phrases in everyday French that I learned in France. ❄️❄️❄️

Moi, je suis frileux, et toi ?
I 🤦🏻‍♂️ when I see websites or teacher I 🤦🏻‍♂️ when I see websites or teachers say that "il faut que" means "it's necessary to".

Sure, you could argue that it means that, but French is easiest to manage when you can ties its expressions to things we ACTUALLY say in English.

When do we ever say "it's necessary to"? I certainly don't!

The French use it 1000 times a day to mean "have to", "need to", and even "should".

It also is the most commonly used phrase that triggers the subjunctive. Ahhhh, the subjunctive! How comfortable are you with it?

Well, if the answer is "not at all" or "so so", then you are a great candidate for my self-paced course starting this weekend.

You can either buy the lessons that come out each weekend that you review whenever you have time.

Or you can pay 59€ and get 4 hours of speaking practice with myself and a group of other learners like yourself.

There are currently 2 or 3 spots left for Tuesdays at 6pm France time, and 5 or 6 left for Thursdays at 3pm France time.

What are you waiting for?

INTERMEDIATES, WANT TO WORK ON THE SUBJUNCTIVE THI INTERMEDIATES, WANT TO WORK ON THE SUBJUNCTIVE THIS MONTH?

My course Parlons Grammaire (= let's talk grammar) will help you do just that and we start this Saturday, November 6th (although you go through the lesson when it's convenient for you)!

The best way to feel confident in your use of the French language is to PRODUCE the language WHILE you're learning, and not just by waiting a few months before using it.

And as French is complex, it can be really beneficial to drill deeper into one topic for a considerable period of time rather than learning a bit of this and a bit of that at once.

That's why in Parlons Grammaire we take 1 topic per month, break it down, and give you the chance to put the knowledge into practise IMMEDIATELY via writing exercises and speaking sessions in pairs and small groups.

- Go through the lessons in your own time. Written in clear English.
- Low pressure.
- Great complement to other studies or activities.

This month's theme is the scary beast the subjunctive in French. "How do you conjugate it?" "Do I have to memorise even MORE conjugations?" "When do you use it?"

Learn the LOGIC behind the subjunctive this month in 4 carefully crafted lessons, released one a time so that you can learn without being overhwhelmed.

A sample lesson is available on the website (link in bio) to get a feel for the course, and you can try for 7 days and if you're not happy you can get a refund, no questions asked.

This month I'm including video lessons for the first time!

More info on the website or head there to sign up aujourd'hui. https://frenchinplainsight.com/courses/parlons-grammaire (or a clickable link is available via the link in my bio).

The course is most suitable for intermediate learners who have never covered the concept of the month before or need to refresh their knowledge and PRACTISE it. I can't stress the benefit of practising with guided exercises enough.

(Hands up if you remember Bananaman from UK telly 🖐. )

IMPARFAIT & PASSÉ COMPOSÉ CONFUSING? One way to IMPARFAIT & PASSÉ COMPOSÉ CONFUSING?

One way to know when to use each is to ask the question "Would 'I used to' fit here in English?"

If so, you need l'imparfait.

There are other meanings to the imparfait, but this is just one little trick.

Est-ce que tu connaissais cette astuce ? Essaye-la dans les commentaires.

I love making French grammar simple. If you like how I explain things, then Parlons Grammaire might be for you. November's edition starts soon. More info via DM or my website. Link in my bio or https://frenchinplainsight.com/courses/parlons-grammaire
